I had a request recently to execute FTP commands from a Microsoft Access program to perform send and receive functions for B2B orders via FTP. It is possible to run scripts that live outside of Access including BAT, CMD and PowerShell scripts. For FTP scripts we can use Windows FTP.EXE command line interface. For thorough coverage of the concept, check out NeoPa’s great article, controlling external processes from Microsoft Access
The implementation I completed allowed the customer to import orders from their B2B site into their in-house Access program that manages orders and tracks/communicates order status. Order updates and shipping information is then FTP’d back to their B2B site to close the loop.
